Aging in Place

By Tom Fredella

The term Aging in Place is getting lots attention lately and it seems to be picking up momentum, but what does it mean?  Does Aging in Place simply mean to grow older? The term really means having the ability to grow older in your own home. There is a lot more to Aging In Place however preparing our homes for aging in them is a large part of the subject. Most people tend to “go with the flow” rather than Age in Place. We wince at the idea of growing older so we sweep the subject under the rug along with any helpful and necessary planning that is involved with Aging in place.  Going with the flow has gotten us by for many years, I’m not talking financially, I’m talking in our everyday lives. If we have been able to get by without planning to age in our everyday lives, imagine what some actual planning could do for us.

I read an article some years ago a part of which really stuck with me. “People plan more for their demise then they do for their living” that’s uncomfortably true. How many of you have a plan for you’re your final arrangements?  How many of you have taken a pen and paper and walked around your home to list areas that may present problems for you now or in the future? If you have done so I commend you however the majority of folks cannot say the same. So you may be thinking “I don’t need any of this, and ,all of these fancy terms and techniques, what is so different that we need it now.  Aging in Place is becoming popular because we now have groups like AARP, National Home Builders Association, Gilberts Guide, and many other areas of information that are specifically teaching us how to age safely in our homes. They teach were problems occur, some will give statistics of how many falls occur in the bathroom per year versus, the front door.  Growing older without planning is what we do growing older with a plan is Aging in Place. This is the basis of what these vehicles of information are trying to convey.

If you don’t get anything else out of this article just remember, lots of things get better with age, Cheese, wine, and so do we, especially with some planning to grow older. Another thing to think about is that a lot of cultures, still to this day rely on the elder grandparents to take large part in raising the children while the parents go out to work.  That’s because being older means being wiser, you can’t help it years add wisdom. Why not turn some of that wisdom on yourself and plan for your future. If you feel like you’d like to plan for your demise by all means that is also a smart and thoughtful thing to do as long as you’re also planning to live. Did you know that approximately 80% of home accidents happen in the bathroom?

So what actually is aging in Place again? The ability to remain in our own homes SAFELY as we grow older with a PLAN.  An AARP study showed that 90% of those surveyed over 50 years of age wanted to stay put in their homes for the rest of their lives. The surveys all show most folks would rather remain in their homes yet the same people surveyed have not made any preparations to do so. Most homes, even the homes in retirement communities are referred to as Peter Pan Housing because they were built for occupants that will never age instead of being built to help with Aging. Bathrooms are small and narrow, Doorways are narrow, the entry into these homes have narrow steps. So many other areas of importance inside and out of the home exist that could be changed to make your home safe, comfortable, and lend convenience to anyone.

A powerful misconception is that Aging in Place is for the elderly, and although it is aimed at aging families and individuals, it’s not! Aging in Place techniques work for elderly yes but they also work for a young family or a disabled family. Imagine a young woman with a baby stroller dragging it up the front step trying to hold the storm door open, it’s a lot of work. The good part is that you can change your home to suit your needs, before the needs arise once you know what to look for. That my friend is aging in Place, being prepared. Doing certain things to your home while your able to do them is planning ahead, and there is also another name for doing the planning, aging in place.

Lets take that reference I made to planning for our deaths earlier, as uncomfortable as it is. Now, the first thing that we recommend to someone that intends to remain in their home for life especially if their alone, is a Medical Alert. This works like a burglar alarm as far as being connected to a call center only the button you push is worn as a necklace, or a bracelet. In the case of an accident you push the button and help is on the way for anywhere from $12.00 per month up to $50.00 per month.

Wow that’s expensive! Lets say you come home one day carrying packages. After standing on the narrow step, juggling the packages to put the key into the door while holding the storm door with your knee, then the storm door slamming behind you and, you’re in. In your home safe and sound once again. All of a sudden you catch you’re foot on the transition between the tile entryway and the carpet, down you go packages and all. When you fall you hit your head, and statistically 33% of people over 65 years old fall this same way.  When you wake up you’re dizzy, there is blood on the floor the phone is on the other side of the room and you can’t get up. At least you’ve made your funeral arrangements is not what you’re thinking. You need to get to that phone or hope someone hears you yelling for help.

A midrange Medical alert is let’s say 30.00 a month, and that’s a good one that lets you have a two way conversation with the call center. An inexpensive funeral arrangement is approx. $6,000.00. That same $6,000.00 could pay for your Medical alert for 16 Plus years. Better yet, a wider front step $800.00* a keyless entry $200.00* a bench at the front door to set down packages $300.00* a grab bar at the front door to hold onto $125.00* A roof over the front door so you’re not effected by rain and snow $800.00* and a smooth inside carpet transition $100.00. The total is $2,325.00* (*represents approx. installed prices) or a little more than 1/3rd of a inexpensive funeral cost will make your entire front entrance almost accident proof.  These are the items and areas an aging in place specialist consultant would recommend and/or install to prevent an accident from happening.
